Iona Marble

Filter

Iona Marble is not readily available as the quarry closed in 1918 due to dwindling stocks. My grandfather was able to purchase some of the last stock of the marble in the 1950s, but these are now in very short supply, so we only get one batch made per year.

The marble is very significant, not only for its beautiful feel and colour, but legend has it that in ancient times, islanders carried a piece of Iona Marble when at sea to save them from drowning. It was formed around 2 billion years ago, making it one of the oldest known rocks in the British Isles. The marble's distinctive green hue comes from the presence of minerals like serpentine, which are formed under high-pressure conditions deep within the Earth's crust.
